[place_master_id=1216 DescriptionChange=”{ The history of Yasaka Shrine dates back to before the capital was moved to Heian. There are two theories about the origins of the shrine: “Immigrants enshrined a god” and “A monk built a hall.” Under the main hall is a dragon hole where Seiryu (the guardian deity of the east, deeply connected to water) is said to live.
The base of the lion statue near the Nishiroumon Gate also has a blue dragon pattern, showing that this has been a sacred and special place since ancient times.
When an epidemic broke out in Heian-kyo, prayers were offered at Yasaka Shrine, and the epidemic subsided, leading to the shrine’s development as a place to ward off epidemics. The Gion Festival, one of Japan’s three major festivals, is also a festival held at Yasaka Shrine to pray for the elimination of epidemics.
By the way, the name Yasaka Shrine has only been used since the Meiji period; before that, the shrine was called “Gionsha” and “Gion Kanshin-in.” The chozuya (purification fountain) at the entrance to the Nishi-romon Gate has the characters “Kanshin-in” engraved on it.
The deities enshrined at Yasaka Shrine are the husband and wife deities Susanoo and Kushiinadahime-no-Mikoto, and their children. During the Gion Festival, three portable shrines carrying each deity are paraded through the city. }” show_photos embed id=”y-cubWj8Q6″]
