In 1694 (Genroku 7), the temple was converted from Rinzai to Soto sect by Zen master Manzan Dohaku. The current main hall was built in the same year. There is a round “Enlightenment Window” and a square “Mayoi Window”, each of which contains the Buddha’s will. The ceiling of the main hall is a relic from Fushimi Castle, and is a bloody ceiling that tells the story of the tragedy of the fall of the castle.

This is a Nichiren sect temple in Takagamine. In 1615, Honami Koetsu was given this land by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and he moved there with his family and acquaintances, running an art village. At that time, a memorial tablet hall was built to hold a memorial service for the ancestors of the Honami family, and after Koetsu’s death, Koetsu-ji Temple was founded in this place with which he had a connection. There are teahouses with different styles scattered around, such as Sanbaan and Ryojakuken, and the temple is surrounded by a fence called Koetsu-gaki. It is particularly beautiful in autumn, and the stone pavement at the entrance to the temple, dyed in autumn leaves, is very tasteful.
