[place_master_id=2980 DescriptionChange=”{ Otowayama Kiyomizu-dera Temple was founded in 778, about 1,250 years ago. As a sacred place for the Kannon Bodhisattva, who symbolizes great mercy, it has been open to the general public since ancient times and has been loved by a wide range of people. Old historical documents and literature depict many people enjoying their visit to Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

The temple grounds, which cover an area of 130,000 square meters and are spread across the middle of Mt. Otowa in the east of Kyoto, are lined with over 30 temple buildings, some of which are national treasures and important cultural properties. Since its founding, the temple has been hit by more than 10 major fires, destroying the buildings each time, but it has been rebuilt many times thanks to the devout faith of the temple’s residents. Most of the current temple buildings were rebuilt in 1633. In 1994, it was registered as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, “Cultural Monuments of Ancient Kyoto.”}” show_photos embed id=”XHG5n925Iy”]

It seems that tea houses used to be crowded on the north side of the river as well, and the “Kanikakuni” monument, west of Shinbashi, engraved with the famous poem “Kanikakuni Gion, I long for it, even when I sleep, the water flows under my pillow”, stands on the site of “Otomo”, a tea house frequented by poet Yoshii Isamu. Until it was demolished due to wartime evacuation, “Otomo”‘s tatami room was built overhanging the Shirakawa River. At one point, the scenery was lost, but thanks to the enthusiasm of the local people, the Shirakawa River has now returned to a place where carp swim and ducks play. The area is full of atmosphere all year round, with beautiful weeping cherry blossoms in spring, willows casting their shadows on the river surface, and autumn leaves in autumn.}” show_photos embed id=”asanCfa1kr”]
